Turn a manuscript into a free audiobook. Choose a narrator — woman or man, British or American, friendly or formal — listen on this page, then download one file or a set of chapter files and intro pages in the shape retail sites expect.
Paste the text, or bring in a .txt, .md, or .docx file. Chapter headings — including Word heading styles — a prologue, a dedication and the like are split into their own files. A long stretch with no headings is still read, in parts. Nothing is stored on the server.

Chapter files are a zip: opening credits, each intro page, each chapter, and closing credits, as separate MP3s at 44.1 kHz and 192 kbps, with a note on what retail sites usually ask for. Intro pages are the credits and any dedication, preface, or prologue. Which shops will actually sell a synthetic narration is on the sell page. Files you have not spoken yet are left out, and named in the note inside the zip.

The Listening Room is a free text-to-speech studio for writers who want an audiobook made from the manuscript itself: an AI narrator you can choose, a British voice or an American and general-English voice, then a download suitable to upload where synthetic narration is allowed. It is published by Stewart Ferris. The practical handbooks are in the bookshop, and the other free writing studios are listed on the companion page.
