Accepts digital narration, but names some providers and not others

Spotify’s help page says it accepts digital voice narration “from providers like Google Play Books, ElevenLabs, and more.” The Listening Room uses xAI voices, which are not on that named list. Ask Spotify before you count on a yes.

Market

Spotify is one of the largest audio services in the world. Audiobooks there are still a younger shelf than music: some countries include hours inside Premium, and listeners can also buy a book outright.

Spotify for Authors says audiobooks uploaded there are offered to listeners in the countries that programme covers. One Spotify help page described that set as 22 countries. Check the current list in your account.

The Audio Publishers Association does not publish Spotify’s share of US audiobook revenue. Among people who listened to any audiobook in the year of their 2026 survey, 48% had used a subscription service and 42% had used credits from a dedicated audiobook service. Those figures are not Spotify’s market share.

A digital-voice title stays on Spotify. Spotify says it does not currently share those books with its referral partner, so this route does not place the book on Apple, Audible, or library apps.

Files they prefer

Spotify’s upload article accepts MP3, WAV, or FLAC. Cover art is PNG or JPEG, square, with 3000 × 3000 pixels recommended.

A Listening Room MP3 is the right kind of file. Upload the chapter files rather than one long file if the form asks for chapters.

Tick “This audiobook uses digital voice narration”. Spotify adds a sentence to the description telling listeners the narration is digital.

Because the accepted-provider line says “like Google Play Books, ElevenLabs, and more”, write to [email protected], say the audio was made in The Listening Room with an xAI voice, and keep their answer. Do not assume “and more” includes every synthetic voice.

Money

Uploading through Spotify for Authors is free, and Spotify’s distribution terms do not take ownership of the recording.

There are two kinds of royalty: à-la-carte purchases, and listening by Premium subscribers whose plan includes audiobooks. Spotify’s royalty article does not publish a fixed percentage of the list price.

In the US, accounts that joined after 4 May 2026 are paid through Spotify Payouts, monthly, with some quarters bundled in. Earlier US accounts, and accounts outside the US, are paid through Tipalti. Minimums depend on the provider.

You will not earn referral-partner royalties on a digital-voice upload, because those files are not sent onward.

What else to know

Replacing the synthetic reading later with a human narrator means unticking the digital-voice box. Spotify then removes the disclosure sentence.

Spotify also has its own Audiobook Creation Tools, which generate a Spotify recording. That is not your Listening Room file. If you use it, you are publishing Spotify’s narration, not this studio’s.

An ISBN is covered in a separate Spotify help article. Read it if you already sell an ebook edition and want the audiobook tied to it.
